Welcome to the first issue
of the SOS America Newsletter! I appreciate
you stopping by the SOS Table in Club RT at
the 2009 Romantic Times’ (RT) Booklovers
Extravaganza in Orlando. I’m still unpacking
my goodies and catching up on my sleep - how
about you?
1. What is SOS? Support Our Soldiers (SOS)
America is a 501(c) charity registered with
the DOD’s "America Supports You"
program, www.ourmilitary.mil/help.shtml. SOS
America is listed under:
- Help for the wounded
- Letters and messages
- Send care packages
Kathryn Falk, Lady of Barrow, established SOS
America in response to military personnel deploying
for the War on Terrorism. As the founder and
CEO of Romantic Times' Book Reviews, www.romantictimes.com,
Kathryn called upon reader, authors, and publishers
to donate books, phone cards, and toiletries
to support our troops in remote locations. SOS
America continues to respond to requests from
soldiers, families and other organizations.
Further, Kathryn built the SOS America Retreat
on her ranch in Alvin, Texas. She has a special
"Soldiers' Cabin" for military personnel
and their families to recover, relax, and rejuvenate,
www.sosamericainc.org.
2. How can you help? I recently received a
list of deployed soldiers who are not receiving
mail. Just a letter will lighten their day!
This is a great project for scouts, church groups,
etc. To adopt a soldier, email
me and I’ll send you his/her
mailing address..
3. 21 Gun Salute to the sponsors of the SOS
Military Mixer: Special thanks to the generous
sponsors who made the mixer possible in Orlando:
- Delores Fossen, www.dfossen.com
- Elle James, www.ellejames.com
- Sherry James, www.sherryjames.com
- Catherine Mann, www.catherinemann.com
- Dana Marton, www.danamarton.com
- Julie Miller, www.juliemiller.org
- Robin L. Rotham, www.robinlrotham.com
- Rebecca York, www.rebeccayork.com
How well do you know these fabulous authors?
Most have a connection to the military. I’ll
send one book from these authors to the first
8 readers who can correctly identify a military
connection. I’ll publish the names of
the winners in the next newsletter.
4. Veteran Sightings: I enjoyed meeting military
veterans and family members at the SOS Table
in Club RT. I introduced many veteran readers
to the veteran writers, including 5 members
of the RomVets – veterans who write romance,
www.romvets.com. Did you meet a RomVet? I’ll
send a book from a RomVet to the first 5 readers
who can identify one of the RomVets at RT. I’ll
publish the names of the winners in the next
newsletter.
5. Recommended Reading: I consider myself a
connoisseur of Historical Romances, but I have
recently expanded into contemporaries, including
Lori Wilde, www.loriwilde.com. I fell in love
with two of her military heroes:
- Joel Hunter, disgraced Navy Seal turned NCIS
agent from You Only Love Twice (Warner March
2006). The best line in the book - “NCIS
is good, but the Seals are better.” My
kids (NCIS fans) disagreed, “Nobody can
beat Abby.” Any other NCIS fans out there?
- Brody Carlton, Army amputee turn town Sheriff
from Addicted to Love (Warner Forever October
2008). The best scene in the book - Brody is
drying off from a swim when the heroine, Rachel,
spies him without his artificial leg.. Rather
than pity Brody, Rachel found him sexy.
Lori released two books in April 2009:
- All of Me (Warner Forever), the next book
in the Wedding Veil Wishes series
- The Right Stuff (Harlequin Blaze), about an
Air Force doctor.
Someone else wrote a book titled The Right Stuff.
Who is the author and what is the connection
between the two books? I’ll send a copy
of Lori's book to the first reader with the
correct answers. I’ll publish the name
of the winner in the next newsletter.
6. How to contact me: Respond to this email,
sos.america@yahoo.com, to adopt a soldier, enter
the contests, recommend a book, or share your
own story with the military.
In closing, May is Armed Forces Appreciation
Month. Hug a Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine,
Coast Guardsman, and their family members!
Mahalo,
Kim
